Owners of Lifespan Help Rebuild School in Fiji

Pam Goodman, RN and Becky Peters, RN participated in an International Rotary Project in April, 2009. Along with Rotarians from Taveruni, Fiji and Maketu, New Zealand, the Capitola/Aptos Rotary Club sent a group of volunteers to a remote area in Fiji. In Vuna Village, the group worked for a week to refurbish a dilapidated elementary school. Pam and Becky with Fijian Elder

While there, Becky and Pam were able to visit the oldest person in the village. At age 89, Nau Moi (Grandmother Moi) lives with her son in a small house with a tin roof, no electricity and outdoor plumbing. She has seven children. Sitting on grass mats on the floor, Becky and Pam communicated with Nau Moi through an interpreter. She had a beautiful smile, and she giggled as Becky and Pam presented gifts.

In New Zealand, the Lifespan RNs were introduced to an elder in the town of Maketu, a small town in the Bay of Plenty.  Rosi Matthews, age 90, is the oldest Maori in the town. She is well-known and respected by all of the townspeople.  Becky and Pam met Rosi at a Maori lodge while participating in a sunrise ANZAC ceremony commemorating New Zealand military veterans. This ceremony included veterans from WWII, Viet Nam and the Iraq wars and was very touching.
